и – і – ї
| Buchstabe | Laut | Beispiel |
| и | kurz, offen, wie i in „Kiste“ | ми́ша, си́ла |
| і | lang, wie i in „Biene“ | кіт, лі́то |
г – ґ – х, р, в
- г ist ein gehauchtes h (гора́), ґ ein hartes g (ґа́нок), х ein ch wie in „Bach“ (хліб).
- р wird mit der Zungenspitze gerollt (ри́ба).
- в klingt wie w; am Silbenende oft wie ein kurzes u (вовк, в шко́лі).
Zischlaute
Weich und hart, Apostroph
- ь ist stumm und macht den Konsonanten davor weich: день, сіль. Auch vor я, ю, є, і sind д, т, з, с, ц, л, н weich.
- Der Apostroph trennt: harter Konsonant, dann j + Vokal: м’я́со (m-jaso), сім’я́.
Stimmhaft bleibt stimmhaft
How the check works when you repeat a word
- Your browser turns what you say into text with its speech recognition (language: Ukrainian). The page compares that text with the target word.
- Correct means: the recognition understood exactly that word. It is a good sign that people will understand you too – but it is not a judgement of fine sounds: recognisers often “guess” the fitting word even when a sound is slightly off.
- If the page shows “almost” with marked letters, a similar word was recognised. The marks show where target and recognised text differ – usually where the sound is difficult.
- Privacy: the recording is sent to your browser’s provider for recognition (e.g. Google in Chrome). Nothing is stored by this page.
- Speech recognition is available in Chrome, Edge and Safari, not in Firefox. It needs internet and microphone permission. Without it you can rate yourself.
- iPhone / iPad (iOS 26): Speech recognition only works in real Safari – not inside apps (Teams, WhatsApp …) and not as a web app from the Home Screen. Also, Dictation (Settings → General → Keyboard → “Enable Dictation”, with the Ukrainian keyboard) and Siri (Settings → Siri or “Apple Intelligence & Siri”) must be on, and Safari needs microphone permission: “aA” menu next to the address bar → Website Settings → Microphone → Allow. If that does not help: close the Safari tab, restart the iPhone and update iOS. Names can differ between iOS versions. If dictation works in Notes but the page reports “service-not-allowed” (even for German and English), Screen Time restrictions or a company profile block speech recognition for Safari – keyboard dictation helps then (see below).
- Keyboard dictation: “Dictate with the keyboard microphone instead” opens a text field. Use the microphone icon of the (Ukrainian) keyboard there; the page compares the dictated text just like speech recognition.
- Tips: quiet room, say the word clearly without a pause before it, say whole phrases in one go.
Stress
Stress is free and not marked in writing; here an acute accent marks the stressed vowel (кни́га). The stressed vowel is clear and a little longer. Unstressed е and и sound similar.
и – і – ї
| Letter | Sound | Example |
| и | short, open, like i in “kit” | ми́ша, си́ла |
| і | long, like ee in “see” | кіт, лі́то |
г – ґ – х, р, в
- г is a breathy h (гора́), ґ a hard g (ґа́нок), х a ch as in Scottish “loch” (хліб).
- р is rolled with the tip of the tongue (ри́ба).
- в sounds like w; at the end of a syllable often like a short u (вовк, в шко́лі).
Hushing sounds
ж (voiced sh), ч (ch), ш (sh), щ (“shch”) and ц (ts) are hard and firm: жі́нка, чай, шко́ла, ща́стя, цу́кор.
Soft and hard, apostrophe
- ь is silent and softens the consonant before it: день, сіль. Before я, ю, є, і, д, т, з, с, ц, л, н are soft too.
- The apostrophe separates: hard consonant, then j + vowel: м’я́со (m-yaso), сім’я́.
Voiced stays voiced
Unlike German (final devoicing: “Hund” → “Hunt”), voiced consonants stay voiced at the end of a word: дуб, хліб, сад end in б, б, д, not п, п, т.
